11/02/11.....

So it is now February 11th and the growing season is nearly here... :)
Its been a long winter and a long wait for my budding green fingers! A new edition to my plot is a mini greenhouse for starting off my seedlings kindly bought for me by my mrs Carly. As you are aware im a newbie to this gardening lark so have been reading up on how to start plants off until i plant them in my soil. I hope i have studied well as am now putting it into practice. But as i said before 'If it dosn't grow keep trying!!'

Getting prepared

So after covering the beds with some well rotted manure ill leave it for the month now and dig it in at the start of March. Just bought my seed potato's which are 'Pentland Javelin' and 'Rocket' both first earlies. And my Onion set which are 'Sturon'. So will be starting to chit the seed potato's this week as i want them in the soil for mid March. I'm also going to put some Garlic in this season and i've bought some 'Allium Sativum' So i best read up on how to grow garlic......

At last planted first veg!!

Its 14/02/2011 its wet n windy and i have been over the plot. Today i planted 8 cabbages and 8 cauliflowers in pots in propagators put one inthe window of the shed and one in the new mini greenhouse... Also i planted out 12 garlic cloves as these need a bit of cold i've put these straight into the soil and covered with glass... Phew i have been itching to plant something for about a month now :)

28/03/11

Planted half of my early potato's today. They were planted 4 inches deep and with a comfrey leaf under them which will give them the right nutrients to get a good start.I planted out 18 'ROCKET' and 18 'PENTLAND JAVELIN'

I also planted my onion set today simple stuff. Prepare the soil into a fine tilth then just pop them in with pointy bit facing up.... Sorted

4TH APRIL 11

Popped over the plot today to dig the manure in more and ended up sowing some carrots and some radish. I also put some lettuce seeds in modules to start them off. So far i have about 5 cabbage and 4 cauliflowers which are growing nicely and some beetroot i've started off in the greenhouse. So quite a productive 3 hours :)

18/04/11

Popped over the plot today just to water my seedlings and ended up planting more pea's, a courgette and my 'REDLOVE' apple tree which i won from the horticultural channel.tv. Thanks guys ;).
I also found a bee making a hive in my shed (same as last spring!) but he has now passed away ;)

Planted some cabbage i grew from seed today.

I have taken alot of leaves off this to make a 'Tea' which will feed my vegetables all season.

I still got things growing in greenhouse to make sure i have a succession of fresh veg instead of a glut..

Runner beans 10/05/11

Planted my runner beans which were grown from seed given to me by Bob.

When you plant runner beans you must secure the 'climbing shoot' to the pole and encourage the shoot to grow anti-clockwise up the pole.

I grow radish cos i love to eat it while on the plot.... dont think i ever take any home lol

My 2nd bed of potato's is started to come through now. planted these a few weeks after my first lot so i dont get a glut all at once...

Now the flower is dying it leaves a tiny fruit which will grow huge if i let it!!

Rigged this netting up to protect my cabbages from 'cabbage white butterfly' which would lay eggs on my cabbages then destroy them when they hatch!!!! Thanks to Roy whom supplied the netting :)
